Our Story

A Home Built on the Belief
That Every Day Still Matters

Tung Lok began with a simple conviction: that later life deserves the same care and attention as any other chapter — perhaps more.

How Tung Lok Came to Be

The residence was founded in 2011 by a group of Hong Kong families who had spent years searching for somewhere that truly suited their ageing parents — somewhere with good Cantonese food, real greenery and the quiet companionship of neighbours who share a similar chapter of life.

They found nothing quite right. So they built it themselves.

Located on a calm stretch of Shouson Hill Road — away from the noise of the city, yet still connected to it — Tung Lok opened its dining hall, courtyard and guest rooms to its first residents in the spring of 2012. Over a decade later, the same founding families remain involved in its direction, and the same unhurried atmosphere persists throughout the building.

Our Mission

To give seniors in Hong Kong a living environment shaped around ease, dignity and connection — where meals taste like home, the garden is genuinely lovely, and every resident is known by name.

Our Values

  • Warmth over efficiency. We measure a good day by how residents feel, not by how many tasks were completed.
  • Honesty in all things. Clear pricing, plain language and no pressure toward decisions that are not ready to be made.
  • Continuity of care. Familiar faces, consistent routines and a building that feels the same each morning.
  • Respect for privacy. Residents choose how much of community life they participate in — there is no obligation to socialise.

The People Behind the Residence

A small team with long tenures — most of our staff have been with us for over five years.

Yvonne is the first person new residents meet and the person they call when something needs attention. She manages welcome hosting, garden access and the small practical details that make a big difference.

How We Maintain Our Standards

Quality at Tung Lok is not a checklist — it is reflected in the texture of each day. These are the commitments that guide the way we work.

Resident Safety

The building is designed for ease of movement, with wide corridors, non-slip surfaces and well-lit communal spaces. Staff conduct daily informal check-ins without intruding on privacy.

Food Safety & Hygiene

Our kitchen follows Hong Kong Food and Environmental Hygiene Department guidelines. Ingredients are sourced fresh each day and allergen information is made available for every meal.

Staff Training & Continuity

All team members complete an in-house orientation on elder communication and household safety. We prioritise long-term employment so residents see the same faces each day.

Privacy & Data Protection

Resident information is held in confidence and never shared with third parties without consent. We comply with Hong Kong's Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance in all our communications and records.

Garden & Environment Care

The gardens are maintained by a dedicated groundskeeper five days a week. Planting choices favour shade, fragrance and seasonal interest — qualities that make the outdoor spaces genuinely worth being in.

Open Communication with Families

Families are welcome to visit, call and ask questions at any time during office hours. We believe that the people who care most about a resident should always feel well-informed and at ease.

A Senior Lifestyle Residence with a Long View

For older residents and their families who are thinking carefully about the next stage of living, Tung Lok occupies a distinct position in Hong Kong. It is not a care home or a nursing facility. It is a place where independent seniors can live comfortably, eat well, enjoy a garden and be part of a small, considerate community — without surrendering the privacy and self-direction that most value deeply.

The Shouson Hill location has been a deliberate choice since the beginning. The area offers a residential calm unusual for Hong Kong Island, with tree-lined roads, proximity to nature and a low noise level that suits the pace of later life. Residents who join Tung Lok often remark that it is the first place since leaving their long-time home where they have genuinely felt settled.

Our dining hall, seasonal menus and communal tea sittings reflect the value placed on Cantonese food as a form of care and connection. When food is prepared with thought and served in good company, it does more than nourish — it anchors the day.
